A Musician and Story Teller Tribute to Harry Chapin
On November 30, 1976, the late Harry Chapin (1942-1981), a folk singer and humanitarian, performed at Kennedy Hall on the campus of St. Vincent College in Latrobe PA. Prior to attending that concert I enjoyed the stories that Harry told in songs. It was a memorable performance as he captivated the audience with his hit songs such as as “Taxi, “Cats in the Cradle,” and “W*O*L*D”. I would listen to Harry on cassette tapes as I drove up and down the east coast of the United States during my time in the Navy. These trips usually included a stop in my home town of Latrobe PA. Harry was committed to the service of others particularly the poor, hungry, and disadvantaged. A true humanitarian harry co-founded the World Hunger Year (now Why Hunger). Today, as I reflect back on that concert, his music, and my time alone in the car, I realize how aspects of some stories that Harry told have also taken place in my life. Thank you Harry may your music and stories live on for another generation.
